Australia Citizenship
Australian citizenship is the legal status that is conferred upon permanent residents of Australia who have resided in Australia for the required period of time, and meet all other criteria providing certain rights and responsibilities, including the right to live in Australia indefinitely, vote in federal and state/territory elections, and apply for an Australian passport.
It provides individuals with a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fully participate in Australia’s democratic processes.

Pathways
There are several pathways to becoming an Australian citizen:
- Citizenship by Descent: For individuals born outside Australia to an Australian citizen parent.
- Citizenship by Conferral: For permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens who meet the residency and other requirements.
- Citizenship by Adoption: For children adopted by an Australian citizen under the full Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption or a bilateral agreement.
- Citizenship by Birth: For individuals born in Australia to at least one Australian citizen or permanent resident parent.
- Citizenship by Resumption: For former Australian citizens seeking to resume their citizenship.
Eligibility
To be eligible for Australian citizenship by conferral, you must:
- Permanent Residency: Hold permanent residency status or be an eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Residency Requirement:
- Lived in Australia for at least 4 years on a valid visa.
- Been a permanent resident for at least 12 months before applying.
- Not been absent from Australia for more than 12 months in total during the 4 years, including no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.
- Good Character: Meet the character requirements.
- Knowledge of Australia: Understand the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizenship and pass the citizenship test (if required).
- Language Proficiency: Have basic knowledge of the English language.
- Intend to reside: Intend to live in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia.
Citizenship Test
- The citizenship test assesses your knowledge of Australia, its democratic beliefs, rights and liberties, and the responsibilities of citizenship. It is required for most applicants aged 18 to 59 applying for citizenship by conferral.
- The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need to answer at least 75% correctly (15 out of 20) to pass.
- Study materials are provided to help you prepare for the test.
Application Process
Stage 1 – Lodgement of Application
The first step is to lodge your citizenship application, along with all the necessary documents required to prove that you meet the relevant requirements.
Stage 2 – Citizenship Test
Once the DOHA has decided that you are eligible for the conferral of citizenship, they will ask you to attend an appointment with a case officer. At this appointment, you will go thru the citizenship test, which contains questions about the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizenship, along with questions about life in Australia and what it means to be an Australian citizen. Each eligible adult applicant must take this test.
Stage 3 – Citizenship Ceremony
After you have passed your citizenship test and the DOHA has approved your application, you need to attend a citizenship ceremony. This usually takes place within 3 months of the date that an application is approved, although waiting times vary by city. At the ceremony, you must take the Australian Citizenship Oath to complete the process of becoming an Australian citizen. All eligible adult applicants must attend a citizenship ceremony.
Revocation of Citizenship
- Reasons: Citizenship can be revoked if it was obtained fraudulently or if the citizen is convicted of certain serious criminal offenses.
- Process: Revocation is a rare and serious action taken by the government.
